What, then, is the source of our knowledge of time, as well as of the other formal elements that give our experience its organized structure?

This structure is the result of the creative activity of the mind.

When the mind receives the input of the senses - smells, colors, sounds, tastes, textures and equilibrium - it simultaneously does its work of organizing these raw data into coherent structures or objects in a single unified whole.

The result of this subconscious activity and that of the senses working together is the coherent world we actually experience.

The activity of the mind is a necessary agent
in the construction of an orderly world.

The mind organizes our sense data.
This activity is one of synthesis.
The mind takes the various items
brought to it by the senses and unifies,
or synthesizes,
these to produce the 'unity' of objects
we experience as our reality or the world.

The mind consists of activities
which include the 'transcendental unity of apperception'.

Transcendental' means two things;
-the activity in question is not empirically observable;
we cannot perceive the mind at work through our senses.
-the activity is a necessary condition of orderly experience;
if it were not occurring, we would not be able to experience the world which we in fact do.

The term 'apperception' is in this illustration;
I do not only observe the object, the cart,
but I connect it with the road,
the scenery around the cart and, going further,
with its point of origin and destination.

In fact I connect the cart, or could do so, with the totality of my experience.
The cart is, in other words, a feature of a whole world in which I live through time.

The ability to integrate my experience of the cart with the totality of my experiences, to create a world of reality,
is not accomplished through perceptions
it is accomplished by the mind through apperception

The greatest problem for the human species,
the solution of which nature compels him to seek,
is that of attaining a civil society which can administer justice universally.
