Swastika

The earliest consistent use of swastika motifs in the archaeological record dates to the Neolithic.

The swastika is a repeating design, formed by the edges of the reeds in a square basket-weave.

The swastika symbol was found on a number of shards in the Khuzestan province of Iran and as part of the "Vinca script" of Neolithic Europe of the 5th millennium BC.

In the early Bronze Age the swastika appears on pottery:

found in Sintashta, Russia;

at Lothal and Harappa, on Indus Valley seals;

on pottery in archaeological digs in the area of ancient Kush;

at the Gebel Barkal temples as well as in digs corresponding to the later Ballana culture.

Swastika appears in Bronze and, later, Iron Age designs of the northern Caucasus (Kuban culture), and Azerbaijan, as well as of Scythians (Askuzai) and Sarmatians.

Swastika shapes have been found on numerous artifacts from Iron Age Europe (Greco-Roman, Illyrian, Etruscan, Baltic, Celtic, Germanic, Georgian Bordjgali and Slavic).

This prehistoric use seems to be reflected in the appearance of the symbol in various folk cultures of Europe and were used at times to symbolize the Sun.

Historically, the swastika became a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Mithraism.

Ancient Greek architecture, clothing and coin designs are replete with single or interlinking swastika motifs.

In Greco-Roman art and architecture; in Romanesque; and in Gothic art the swastika is more commonly found as a repeated element in a tessellation.

The swastika was used by some Native Americans:

in excavations of Mississippian-era sites in the Ohio valley;

widely used by many southwestern tribes, most notably the Navajo;

ornamental element in Mongolian culture, meaning good luck.

Most editions of Joseph Rudyard Kipling works published in the first decades of the 20th century are adorned with the swastika.
