The Bohemian Club's all-male membership and guest list
includes artists, particularly
musicians, as well as many prominent business leaders, government
officials, including former US presidents, senior media executives, and people
of power.
The
Grove is particularly famous for a Manhattan Project planning meeting that took
place there in September 1942, which led to the atomic bomb.
Those
attending this meeting included Ernest Lawrence, UC Berkeley colleague
J. Robert Oppenheimer, and various military
officials.
The S-1 Executive Committee included the presidents of
Harvard, Yale, and Princeton along with representatives of
Standard Oil and
General
Electric.
1872 The Bohemian Club is founded by a small group of San
Francisco journalists, writers, actors, and lawyers.
"Some of the
richest men in San Francisco enjoyed membership. While not considered as high
status as the Pacific Union Club, it was listed in the Elite Directory
(1879), the San Francisco Blue Book (1888), Our Society Blue Book
(1894-95), and other social registers of that era.
By 1879 one in every
seven members of the very exclusive Pacific Union Club was also a member of the
Bohemian Club, with the figure climbing to one in five by 1894 and one in four
by 1906.
Owl's Nest was a high-status camp in the late 1970s and 1980s
because Ronald Reagan was a member starting in 1975.
His
camp buddies included the chairmen or presidents of United Airlines, United
California Bank, Dart Industries, Carter-Hawley-Hale, Dean Witter, and Pauley
Petroleum.
There were also retired
top execs from Pacific Telephone, General Dynamics, and United
Airlines.
While Reagan was rubbing shoulders with CEO's from
United Airlines and United
California Bank, Bush was chatting with the presidents of Eastern Airlines and
the Bank of
America.
Mandalay, Owl's Nest, Hill Billies,
and the Isles of Aves were at the heart of Republican administrations in
the 1980s.
George
Shultz, Secretary of State, and William French Smith, Attorney General,
were members of Mandalay.
Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of
Defense, was a member of the Isles of Aves.
William H. Draper
III, president of the Export-Import Bank, and Michael P. W. Stone, Secretary of

Secretary of Treasury, attacks George Herbert Walker Bush for
abandoning the Reagan
agenda.
By this time
Simon is a multi-millionaire many times over.
Gehenna is derived from "Ge
Hinnom," meaning "Valley of Hinnom."
"Ge Hinnom" is also called "Gai
ben-Hinnom," meaning "valley of Hinnom's son."
The valley is outside
the south wall of ancient Jerusalem, and stretches from the foot
of Mount Zion eastward to Kidron Valley.
Gehenna is mentioned 13 times
in 11 different verses in the Bible (King
James version) as "valley of Hinnom," "valley of the son of Hinnom" or
"valley of the children of Hinnom."
Gehenna is not described as
a spiritual hell but
a literal valley near Jerusalem
(Joshua 15:8, Joshua 18:16, 2nd Kings 23:10, 2 Chronicles 28:3, 2nd Chronicles
33:6, Nehemiah 11:30, Jeremiah 7:31~32, Jeremiah 19:2, Jeremiah 19:6, Jeremiah
32:35).
The word Gehenna (Gehennem, Jahannam)
also occurs in the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an, as an Islamic
place of torment for sinners.
The
southwestern gate of Jerusalem, overlooking the
valley, came to be known as "The Gate of the Valley".
Jeremiah 7:31;
19:2-6; 32:35; the Book of Jeremiah (2:23) speaks of residents worshiping
Moloch and committing abominations which foreshadowed the destruction of
Jerusalem.
Moloch comes from
a Semitic root meaning "king".
Moloch, meaning "King of Deifications" or "Supreme God", is Semitically conceptualized in
a pattern after that of El
accept that Moloch required parents to
sacrifice their children on a stone altar.
This form of human sacrificial
worship was practiced by the Aztecs, the Phoenicians and related cultures
in North Africa and the
Levant.
Moloch is comparable to the
gnostic Hebrew Demiurge who faultily forged
reality.
The practice was outlawed by King Josiah (2 Kings, 23:10).
"Thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass
through the fire to Moloch." - Leviticus 18:21
Biblical commentator
Rashi explains that priests would bang on drums so mothers would not hear
the groans of children
being sacrificed.
Hence the name Topheth.
Tophet or Topheth
is believed to be a location in the Valley of Hinnom, where the myth suggests
the Canaanites sacrificed
children to the deification Moloch by burning them alive.
After the practice
of child sacrifice was outlawed by King Josiah, the valley became a refuse site
where carcasses, waste and the bodies of criminals were dumped, with
fires permanently burning to keep disease
at bay.
Tophet became a synonym for
hell.
The only place
known to currently reinact the sacrifice of children to the deification of
Moloch by burning them alive occurs at Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio,
California.
Care
(Empathy) is placed on a
stone altar and immolated.
The term Moloch has been used
figuratively in English literature from John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667) to
Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" (1955), to refer to a person or thing demanding or
requiring a very costly
sacrifice.
The Cremation of Care was separated from
the other Grove plays in 1913 and moved to the first night to become "an exorcising of the Demon to ensure the success of
the ensuing two weeks." |
