Might the 'cure' in fact
be the poison? Pyriproxyfen, a pesticide used in Brazil since 2014 to arrest
the development of mosquito larvae in drinking water tanks is suspected of
causing microcephaly.
The key scientific paper, by A S Oliveira Melo et
al in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, found Zika virus
in the amniotic fluids, tissues of affected babies and their mothers but only
two women were examined, far too small a number to establish a statistically
significant link.
Brazil's Health Minister, Marcelo Castro, claimed
"100% certainty" of a link between Zika and microcephaly based on this mixture
of epidemiological indications and
circumstantial
evidence.

DDT is present in the Palos Verdes sediments,
Los Angeles largely as a result of wastewater discharges from the former
Montrose Chemical plant in Torrance, California, which operated from 1947 to
1983.
Wastewater containing over 1,700 tons of
DDT was discharged from the Montrose plant
into local sewers.
Fish caught off the coast of California from Ventura
to Dana Point contain the highest known concentrations of DDT.

1977 Pesticide spill at Del Monte
Fresh Produce Co. contaminates a local drinking water system on the
island of Oahu, Hawaii.
The site is placed on the Superfund list in 1994 and is contaminated by
the pesticides ethylene dibromide, dibromo-chloropropane, and trichloropropane.
1984 An
accident at the Union Carbide Sevin® pesticide plant in Bhopal, India,
released at least 30 tons of a highly toxic gas called methyl isocyanate, as
well as a number of other poisonous gases.
3,800 residents killed
immediately, 600,000 experienced significant morbidity and mortality, including
being partially or
totally disabled, and experiencing premature death.
Autopsies
performed on 300 victims of the disaster showed lesions that were severely
necrotized on the upper respiratory tract lining, the lung capillaries,
alveoli, and bronchioles.
In addition, the autopsies revealed edematous
and enlarged lungs, hemorrhages, bronchopneumonia, and acute
bronchiolitis.
Lesions related to respiratory
tract toxicity were seen in both the upper and lower respiratory tracts, and
included chest pain and
pulmonary distress, pneumonitis,
pulmonary edema,
and pneumothorax.
Gastrointestinal problems included persistent diarrhea
and persistent abdominal pain.
Genetic health effects included increased
chromosomal abnormalities.
Acute psychological health effects included
neuroses, anxiety, and adjustment reactions; and acute neurobehavioral effects
reported and observed were impaired audio and visual memory,
psychomotor coordination,
reasoning and spatial coordination.
Chronic and long-term health risks
of methyl isocyanate exposure, particularly 1 to 25 years after the Bhopal
incident, also involved injuries to the ocular,
respiratory, and other
organ systems, including reports of long-term injuries to the reproductive and
nervous systems.
Long-term reproductive health risks include increased
spontaneous abortions,
increased perinatal and neonatal mortality, menstrual cycle alterations,
decreased placental weights, and
increased chromosomal
alterations.
Neurological symptoms include
depression, impaired
associative learning, motor speed and precision, and muscle aches.
1986 Use of the herbicide Dinoseb is banned after tests
concluded that it causes fertility
problems and congenital defects
in lab animals.
1989 Russian authorities use the
chemical agent chloropicrin to disperse an opposition rally Soviet Georgia
during political unrest.
Intense media publicity surrounding confirmed
use of poison gases and rumors students had been gassed, trigger the rapid
spread of anxiety reactions.
Symptoms spread among 400 adolescent
females at several nearby schools.
The transient complaints mimicked the
poison gas symptoms: stomach ache, burning eyes, skin irritation and dry throat
(Goldsmith, 1989).

analysis of 117
studies of the incidence of lymphoma in the US concludes
that people most often develop the cancer in areas with the highest pesticide
and herbicide use.
The pesticides most associated with
lymphoma, according to
the Lymphoma Foundation of America (LFA) are the herbicides 2,4-D
(2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and triazines (which include atrazine,
cyanazine and simazine).
Phosphine compounds also had a high
association with lymphoma.
These include: 2,4,5-T,
glyphosate,
lindane, carbaryl,
chlordane arsenates, diazinon, dichlorovos and
malathion.
According to the LFA, the studies also showed a link between
lymphoma and exposure to
solvents.
2,4-D
first marketed in the US in 1940s, is detected in the ground water in 5 states
and in 2003 found in 63% of home
dust samples.
DuPont ceased sales of
Benlate, a fungicide,
after hundreds of lawsuits.
2002
DuPont has spent over $1.3
billion on litigation
and damages primarily for property damage to crops, flowers and ornamental
plants damaged by Benlate.
2003 Delaware Supreme
Court rules that statute of limitations doesn't begin in a toxic exposure case
until discovery of a
possible link between substance and injury.
Children born with eye defects that were originally thought to be
genetic were linked to prenatal exposure to the pesticide Benlate.
2004 Run-off of the pesticide ICON, active
ingredient friponil, manufactured by
Aventis CropScience
kills many of some 1,500 crawfish farmer's crawfish.
Observers from
Emory University and the University of Washington find an association between
exposure to the organic pesticide Rotenone and
Parkinson'
disease.
2005 New study based upon results
from Washington State's first year of mandatory testing of farm workers found
that one in five of those workers who either mix or spray pesticides and/or
herbicides "experienced significant health affects."
Of the 580 workers
tested, 20.6% experienced at least a 205 drop in the enzyme cholinesterase.
The enzyme is reportedly "vital to the body's
nervous
system."
Some 4.4% of the workers experienced at least a 30% drop
in the enzyme level.
Two of the more commonly used pesticides that
affected the workers were azinphos methyl also called Guthion and
chlorpyrifos.
According to the EPA, 80% of all the orchards in the Northwest US are
treated with both of these industrial oils.
West Virginia residents
seek class action certification in a suit against Solutia alleging exposure to
toxic oil which emanated from a facility that manufactured Agent Orange, a
blend of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T and picloram.
