József Cserny carried a long, sharp hunting knife
stuck in one of his boots.
To their fortress-mansion the 'Boys'
conveyed by motor-lorries enormous quantities of 'commandeered' clothes, food,
wine, jewelry and ladies,
who, after being forced to take
part in their wild orgies, were boxed on the ears and 'chucked
out.'
1922 A book published by Dr. Albert
Váry "The Victims of Red Terror in Hungary" documents 590 victims
executed by the death squads of Tibor Szamuely and József
Cserny.
During the reign of terror in Budapest, Tibor Számuelly's
'death-train' rushed from one end of the country to the other, landing its
hellish passengers at the scene of every counter-revolutionary movement.
The official assassin of the Dictatorship executed thirty persons in
Szolnok, twenty in Kalocsa, sixty-one in the small village of Duna-pataj, in
addition killing a host of
other innocent people in twenty-five different villages.

The Hungarian Soviet Republic or literally Republic of
Councils in Hungary was a short lived communist rump state.
Though the
de jure leader of the Hungarian Soviet Republic was president Sándor
Garbai, the de facto power was in the hands of foreign minister Béla
Kun, who maintained direct contact with Lenin via
radiotelegraph.
"Béla Kún, (Kohn),
had been compelled, in consequence of petty embezzlements committed at the
expense of the proletariat, to resign his post in the office of the Kolozsvar
Workmen's Insurance Institute.
Earlier in life he had been a
votary of night orgies; and during the 'lean' days of the Soviet regime he did
not abstain from sumptuous banqueting.
While at Petrograd, in the
service of Lenin, Béla Kún had Hungarian
prisoners of war,
officers and privates alike, shot en masse with machine-guns, for refusing to
join the Russian Red Army.
As
People's Commissioner, he took up his quarters in a fashionable hotel on
the Danube Embankment, under the protection of a body-guard armed with hand
grenades.
When, under the pretext of 'nationalization,'
the Soviet authorities
proceeded vigorously to confiscate property, thirty-four banks were occupied by
armed forces and placed under Communist management.
The entire stock of
money and securities was seized, as well as the jewelry,
gold coins and foreign currency
deposited in the safes.
From the Austro-Hungarian Bank (Budapest
branch) two hundred million crowns were taken and conveyed to Vienna for
propaganda purposes; while foreign currency of the value of at least forty to
fifty million crowns was distributed among the immediate adherents (male and
female alike) of the new masters of the country.
Of the foreign
securities seized several millions' worth were sold; while the Sacred Crown,
the most jealously guarded of all the nation's treasures, was offered for sale.
The salaries
of the persons employed by the new bureaucracy, and the
wages of the workmen
were raised so enormously that there could be
no doubt as to
the probability of a
speedy bankruptcy of the State.
A prison warder was paid
wages amounting to about 30,000 crowns a year.
The Exchequer was
soon empty; and there was a shortage of the means of payment.
At this
juncture Julius Lengyel, People's Commissioner for Finance, declared to a
meeting of the 'trustees' (Vertrauensmänner) of the officials of the bank
of issue that 'there are excellent foreign and native forgers able to make
perfect counterfeits of the Austro-Hungarian banknotes.'
The services
of these 'excellent forgers' were actually requisitioned; and they made an
enormous number of forged Austro-Hungarian banknotes, of 200, 25 and 2 crowns
respectively.
Thus the workers' delight at the
rise of wages became converted into
bitter disappointment, for
they were paid in forged notes which
possessed a very trifling purchasing value.
The country folk refused to have anything to do with
money forged under the aegis of 'authorities' whose term of power was so
problematical, and in consequence
ceased to supply the capital

his body left to decompose in the courtyard of the Houses of Parliament.
Otto Korvin's inquisitors showed accused persons a heap of noses,
tongues, and ears that had been cut off corpses.

forced transfer of various groups: deportations of "anti-Soviet" categories of
population (often classified as "enemies of workers"), deportations of entire

used consistently between 1935 and 1938, at least nine different nationalities

The forcible relocation of families and communities to

March 5, 1940 NKVD carries out
a mass execution of
Polish "intelligence agents, gendarmes, spies, saboteurs, landowners,
factory owners,
lawyers, priests, and
officials"
in what becomes know as the "Katyn Forest Massacre".
The conscription system of Poland
required every unexempted university graduate to become a reserve officer.
NKVD was able to round up much of the Polish, Ukrainian,
Georgian and Belarusian
intelligentsia of Polish citizenship.
The intent was not simply to
destroy the military command but also to
purge its population of
engineers, intellectuals and other citizens whose
education and expertise might
help the country to function independently.

composed the resolution to murder 27,500 Polish officers, soldiers and
civilians. When the members of the Polit-Buro gathered on March 5, 1940,
Berija's resolution was adopted and subsequently carried out in Katyn and other

Simultaneous executions occurred:
POWs from geographically distant Starobelsk and Ostashkov camps;
the executions of
political prisoners from West Belarus and West Ukraine;
those shot
in the Katyn Forest;
at the NKVD headquarters in Smolensk;
at a
Smolensk slaughterhouse;
and at prisons in Kalinin, Kharkiv, Moscow,
and other Russian cities.
The number of executed victims on March 5,
1940 is estimated at about 22,000, with the most commonly cited number of
21,768.

NKVD
The NKVD,
People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, was also known for its Main
Directorate for State Security (GUGB), which eventually became the Committee
for State Security (KGB).
Upon the success of the Russian Bolshevik
Revolution the NKVD (Narodny Komissariat Vnutrennikh Del or People's
Commissariat for Internal Affairs) apparatus was overwhelmed by administrative
functions inherited directly from Imperial Russia, such as the supervision of
the local governments and firefighting as
the new proletarian
workforce was largely inexperienced in administrative
functions.
Realizing that it was left with no capable security force,
the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR forged a secret political
police, the Cheka.
Yakov Grigorevich Blumkin* became head of the Cheka's
counter-espionage department working for Felix Dzerzhinsky (a Pole married to a
Jewess who spoke Yiddish).
During the Red Zionist Terror,
Yakov Grigorevich Blumkin was known for his brutality.

early in the Revolution Mandelstam was sitting in a cafe and there was the
notorious Socialist Revolutionary terrorist Blumkin, at that time an official

arrested and sent to GULAG

Wives of "enemies of the revolution" were
subject to imprisonment

had been a systematic

Warsaw was the center of
Jewish life and culture in Poland.
The Warsaw Ghetto was comprised
of multistory buildings in a bustling business center much like the one in
Chicago built after the Chicago
fire.
Warsaw's prewar Jewish population of more than 350,000
constituted roughly 30% of the city's total population.
The Warsaw
Jewish community was the largest in
Europe and second to only New York City worldwide.
The rebels in the
Warsaw Ghetto, 3.3 km² in the center of Warsaw, had not prepared a path of
retreat or planed any action other than fighting in the ghetto.
The
uprising lasted 28 days and the insurgents numbered around 750.
Two
Jewish underground organizations fought in the Warsaw Uprising.
The left
wing Zydowska Organizacja Bojowa (ZOB) founded by Zionist Jewish youth groups
within the Warsaw Ghetto; and the right wing Zydowski Zwiazek Wojskowy (ZZW),
or Jewish Military Union, a national organization founded in 1939 by former
Polish military officers of Jewish background which had strong ties to the
Polish Home Army.
It is estimated 13,000 Jews died, about half of them
burnt alive or suffocated in bunkers after Jürgen Stroop ordered the
entire Warsaw Ghetto to be systematically burned down and blown up building by
