Moe started out in the circulation department of the Chicago Tribune.
1904 to 1906 Moe serves as circulation manager
for new Hearst publications the American and the Examiner.
Moe succeeds during the early Chicago newspaper circulation wars,
selling newspapers with an army of sluggers, overturning the competition
delivery trucks, burning their papers and roughing up newspaper vendors.
Moe's "genius" is muscle - roster of sluggers included Frank McErlane.
Chicago journalist George Murray described the Annenberg-McErlane
relationship:
"McErlane went on to become the most vicious killer of
his time.
Moe Annenberg, the father of the ambassador to the Court of

Under Hearst, Annenberg was the highest paid circulation
man in the nation.
Hearst
tolerated Moe's myriad private business dealings.
Annenberg realized
the money to be made in the racing information field.
1922 Moe buys the Daily Racing Form.
Jewish
gangsterism flourished in neighborhoods on the Lower East Side; Brownsville,
Brooklyn; Maxwell Street, Chicago; Boyle Heights, Los Angeles.
The
market for vice flourishes during Prohibition.
Jews build a black

1926 Moe's various private businesses become so big he leaves
Hearst.
Moe takes the

forms the Nation-Wide News Service in association with Frank Erickson, a

Lansky and Frank Costello.
1929 Al Capone
brings Annenberg into the underworld's famous Atlantic City Conference, the
gathering at which the groundwork was laid for a
national crime
syndicate that would become international.
Capone and Annenberg
iron out the details of a syndicated racing wire in discussions on the
boardwalk.
Nation-Wide brings in a flood of money.
The
service receives its information from telegraph and telephone wires hooked into
29 race tracks and from those tracks into 223 cities in 30 states, where
thousands of poolrooms and bookie joints operated in violation of local laws.
Annenberg becomes the fifth largest customer of American Telephone
and Telegraph, making transmissions only slightly behind RCA and the three press
associations.
With Annenberg's coöperation that
Meyer Lansky sews up for
himself his preeminent gambling position in Miami and Florida's lush East
Coast.
1930s Annenberg
takes over the century-old Philadelphia Inquirer and through it becomes
a power in Republican Party - a "respectable" citizen.
New York State
Judge Nathan Perlman personally contracts Meyer Lansky to disrupt Bund
rallies.
Meyer Lansky breakes up a Brown Shirt rally in the Yorkville,
Manhattan:
"The stage was decorated with a swastika and a picture of
Hitler.
The speakers started ranting.
There were only fifteen
of us, the Nazis panicked and ran out.
We chased them and beat them up.
We wanted to show them Jews would not always sit back and accept
insults."
In Minneapolis, William Dudley Pelley organizes a Silver Shirt
Legion.
Minneapolis gambling czar David Berman confronts Pelley's
Silver Shirts on behalf of the Minneapolis Jewish community.
Berman with
thugs burst in the rally at the Elks' Lodge and crack heads.
Berman took
the microphone and announced:
"This is a warning. Anybody against Jews
gets the same treatment."
After Berman broke up two more rallies, there
were no more public Silver Shirt meetings in Minneapolis.
1939 Moe and his only son, Walter,
are indicted for income tax
evasion.
In 1932 Annenberg owed $313,000 and paid a paltry $308.
In 1936 Annenberg owed an estimated $1,692,000 and paid $470,000.
All told, along with interest and penalties, unpaid taxes came to $9.5
million.
Annenberg claimed that, because much of his activities came
during a period of national Democratic dominance, his legal troubles were
politically inspired.
New York
Times, reported that the money gush became so large "it apparently did
not seem worth while to give the government its share."
Walter plead
not guilty and Moe agreed to plead quilty in return for the dropping of charges
against his son.
Moe got a three-year prison term and the government
got $9.5 million.
1945 Jewish gangsters help
establish Israel.
Reuven Dafne, a Haganah emissary, seeking funds and
guns to help liberate Palestine from British rule
went to Bugsy Siegel.
"You mean Jews are fighting?" Siegel asked. "You
mean fighting as in killing?"
After Dafne answered in the affirmative
Siegel replied, "I'm with you."
Dafne received suitcases filled with $5
and $10 bills - $50,000 - from Siegel.
In the late 1990s,
Sanford Ziff*, billionaire founder
of Sunglass Hut, reneged on a $2 million pledge to the University of
Miami "the university allowed the
student newspaper to publish
an ad denying the
veracity of the Holocaust.

with Sanford Ziff releasing his donation after the university set up a
committee to revive and expand its courses and programs on
